Fulton County Solicitor General Keith Gammage hosted an event this week to help people review their criminal records and see what could be cleared. Understanding your criminal record is imperative when applying for a job or looking for a place to live.
Getting a copy of your criminal history costs around $75. But on Friday, Gammage made it free. He says knowing what’s on your record can be the first step to moving forward.
“I think once a person is able to see what’s on their criminal history, identify things that are holding them back in particular, our team is working to help remove those old records,” Gammage told Channel 2’s Tom Jones.
Seaborn Kimbrough was eager to find out what could be cleared from his record. Officials identified a felony that might qualify for expungement and recommended that he reach out to the district attorney’s office.
Kimbrough, a reformed criminal, is working toward better job opportunities. He knows a clean record could make a difference.
“It feels good that someone wants to help you, knowing they’re sincere about helping you,” he said.
With government layoffs prompting individuals to seek new employment, Gammage emphasizes that services like this are more crucial than ever.
Jasmine Hudson was thrilled when a prosecutor found a few convictions that could be removed from her record.
“It was so easy. It was quick. And it’s fixing to be beneficial,” she said.
Gammage plans to host another event in April, where people can start the process of expunging convictions. He believes giving people a second chance isn’t just life-changing—it’s good government.
