Brian Steel, attorney for rapper Young Thug (Jeffery Williams), is defending Williams on an array of felonies being prosecuted in Fulton County, Georgia. Steel characterized the prosecution against Williams as a ‘farce.’ To support his argument, Steel filed a sleep-inducing 233-page brief asserting a blizzard of allegation of wrongdoing by prosecutors and judges. Steel’s legal brief can be accessed here.
As reported, a Fulton County grand jury indicted Williams in May 2022, and “more charges were added in a subsequent indictment in August of that year. The second indictment accused Young Thug and 27 other people of conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, known as RICO. The rapper is also accused of participation in criminal street gang activity, as well as drug and gun charges.”
The August indictment includes a wide-ranging list of 191 acts that prosecutors say were committed between 2013 and 2022. For additional details of the prosecution, see here. Several of Williams’ co-defendants have already pleaded guilty.
Steel’s Motion seeks a blizzard of actions. It calls for the removal of Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville. It calls for the disqualification of the state’s prosecutors from the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. Steel’s Motion also “seeks Judge Rachel Krause’s removal from deciding if Judge Ural Glanville should be disqualified from the case due to alleged misconduct.” Significantly, Steel “demands the release of his client from custody.”
An example of a section of Steel’s brief asserts:
“Mr. Williams’ trial is constitutionally broken based upon the unconscionable misconduct of Judge Glanville, lawyer Love, and lawyer Hylton, all working together in an effort to convict Mr. Williams…… This injustice must end immediately, beginning with Judge Glanville removed and disqualified from Mr. Williams’ case and the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office must be investigated for their improper conduct.
Steel advances an ominous assessment of the legal proceedings against his client:
“This judicial and prosecutorial misconduct denotes a disgraceful episode in Fulton County Courts, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, and stains courts throughout the State of Georgia and our country.”
