Students, parents, and teachers at E. Rivers Elementary School gathered to pay tribute to veterans on Monday for the school’s annual Veterans Day celebration.
According to a local Fox 5 Atlanta, “Honorees included family members from across generations, such as parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, and uncles, many of whom are currently serving or have served in the military.”
The event featured a flag-raising ceremony, student remarks, and more.
More than 600,000 veterans live in the Peach State.
On May 13, 1938, the U.S. government made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.”
In 1954, the name of the holiday was changed from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” to recognize veterans of all wars — not just World War I.
