Page Turners: How One Group is Improving Literacy in Georgia’s Preschools

For over a decade, a nonprofit organization in DeKalb County has been dedicated to providing books to young readers.

Children Read, established in 2014, ensures that preschoolers in Title 1 schools throughout DeKalb County and Atlanta have books they can take home.

Volunteers clean and organize donated books each week before packing them for children. But they don’t just distribute books — they also dedicate time to reading aloud, nurturing a love for stories in children from an early age.

The impact has been significant.

In the last year alone, Children Read distributed approximately 30,000 books to 4,000 children, bringing its total donations to nearly 200,000 since its Read Distribute inception.

President Cindy Jaret says the best part is witnessing the kids’ excitement when they receive their books. “They light up,” she says, adding that it’s a small gesture with a tremendous impact.

The group relies solely on donations from families, businesses, and other organizations. Although its storage space is filled with books, the demand continues to grow; every donation matters.
