The Fulton County Jail is the scene of yet another killing. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office has reported that “one inmate is dead, and two others are injured after a stabbing incident on Thursday afternoon at the Fulton County Jail.”
As reported, the stabbings occurred on the 7th floor of the jail. Investigators have not determined the motives for the stabbings, but they have disclosed their belief that “the incident is gang related.” The three attacked inmates were taken by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. The sheriff’s office confirmed that “one of those inmates died from their injuries. The conditions of the other two inmates is unknown.” A suspect or suspects have not been identified.
The Fulton County Jail has been prominently mentioned in the news lately as the venue for many killings and attacks during the past few months. As reported, “nine inmates of the jail have died so far this year. Five of those deaths happened within the past month.” See 1 ½ minute video FOX 5 Atlanta coverage of the stabbings, which occurred Thursday afternoon. Additionally, as reported, “an inmate was found dead in the jail this past Saturday.”
The jail has been in the headlines not only because of the many deaths and attacks that have occurred there but also for its “deplorable conditions.” The investigation initiated by the U.S. Department of Justice was prompted by the many deaths but also the jail’s “unsafe and unsanitary conditions, as well as reports of excessive force, discrimination and failure to provide adequate medical care.” The investigation was prompted in part by the death of LaShawn Thompson, who died in September 2022 while covered in insects and filth.
