Just before 10 pm Sunday evening, Douglas County Sheriff Deputies were called to a home along Brooks Street and “found a woman covered in blood attempting to flee from a man armed with a knife, who was inside the home.” The woman was rushed to an area hospital and was treated for multiple stab wounds. A spokesperson for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said “the deputies were forced to open fire on a man attempting to attack a woman at a the Douglas County home.”
As reported, the attacker ignored the deputies’ command to “drop the knife” and “charged the woman.” The woman was physically next to the deputies. The GBI reported that one of those deputies “shot the man, who died at the scene.” The attacker has been identified as 39-year-old Robernard Benjamin of Lithia Springs. An autopsy will be performed.
A FOX 5 Atlanta report noted that this is the 33rd officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to review this year. The GBI is “conducting an independent investigation into the use of deadly force in the case and will turn over the findings to the Douglas Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.”
