FULL-COURT PRESS ON HUNGER: 5,000 Volunteers Turn State Farm Arena Into a Meal-Packing Machine

Forget the scoreboard.

The biggest number at State Farm Arena this weekend was one million.

That’s how many meals volunteers packed Saturday at the annual Atlanta Hawks–State Farm partnership aimed at Atlantans facing food insecurity. About 5,000 people turned out for the effort. The Million Meal Pack hit its target again this year.

Every meal has a destination. Organizers say 1 in 8 people in Atlanta don’t know where their next meal is coming from. For kids, it’s 1 in 6.

The arena floor became one giant assembly line, and the lineup was stacked.

Hawks player Kingston Flemings pitched in and said the sheer scale of a million meals blew his mind. He added that changing even one person’s life a day is enough, and that working alongside the community was a blast.

U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams rolled up her sleeves too. She said the best part is that every meal stays right here in Atlanta, and that hands-on service lets you see, in real time, what it looks like to put food on someone’s table.

Alexis Roe, the Hawks’ vice president of community impact, channeled Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s idea that everyone can be great because everyone can serve.

“Today, we are bringing the community together so that everybody can serve,” Roe said.

Allyson Watts, State Farm’s senior vice president for the Southeastern market, called the event the company’s good-neighbor mission in action, helping Atlanta families thrive and making the community stronger.

The event has a deep bench of past wins. This was the sixth annual Million Meal Pack. Earlier editions packed 5.1 million meals with help from more than 26,000 volunteers.

Not bad for a Saturday.
