DOC & THE BLOCK: Coach Danny Ketch Shares Life Lessons From the Gridiron [LISTEN]

Durham Saints head coach Danny Ketch has a rule for his players that fits off the field too.

“There’s no finish line in life. There’s no finish line in sport,” Ketch told Doc & The Block this week during a special sit-down interview.

He’s heading into his sixth season as head coach after five as defensive coordinator. He’s a two-time national champion at Durham (2018 and 2026) and the 2026 British University Coach of the Year — titles the hosts laid out when they brought him on with Veron Haynes.

Ketch never saw a football game live in the U.K. until his mid-20s. He grew up on late-night NFL broadcasts, then Madden, then a high-school flag program that marched a school of about 800 to a world championship game in New Orleans. Contact coaching followed.

Then-Durham head coach Jonathan Rooney pulled him in as defensive coordinator.

The rest is championships.

Asked what life lessons he drills through the game, he went straight to the team name.

“For years, I thought, what is it that Saints do?” Ketch said. “So we march as the song says, we march.”

In his program, that means everybody in step. No grandstanding. No shielding the guys in back. “It’s a progression of everybody moving forward as one,” he said. “It’s easy to put something on a PowerPoint and say, this is how we do things. How do you live and how do you breathe that?” If you’re committed, “you’re in the march.”

Titles don’t end the grind. You never just “look out and win” a national championship, he said — you grind to the last day, then try to recreate it with different people.

“If you stand still and watch what’s going on around and raise your hand to celebrate what you’ve done, someone will come and pass you,” Ketch said.

“You’ve got to keep going. You’ve got to keep working.”
