‘FORE’TITUDE: Teen Golfer Swings Back After Losing a Leg [WATCH]

Just two months after a devastating snowmobile accident took his leg, freshman Carter Henning has become the top golfer on Calamus-Wheatland High School’s varsity team.

“We were checking one of their snowmobiles and we were running the track while my friend and I were holding the snowmobile up, and some part of the track snapped and went back into my leg,” Henning said.

Despite multiple surgeries, doctors couldn’t restore blood flow to his left leg, leading to an amputation. “They weren’t able to get blood flow to the left leg, so they ended up doing an amputation. It was heartbreaking,” Henning shared.

A determined Henning set his sights on rejoining the golf team.

“I knew that I was probably going to make the varsity team this year so I really wanted to work back to that goal,” he said. His dedication paid off, as he not only made the team but also rose to the number one spot.

Head coach Austin Tenley praised Henning’s resilience.

“Carter worked his way from the three all the way up to the one and he has yet to prove that he’s not that. He’s got the mental fortitude to actually play the one and he’s got, I mean, all the skills,” Tensley said.

And Henning’s performance continues to improve.

“When I first started, I was through 9, I was shooting about high to mid forties. Now I’m low forties almost every round,” he noted. He added, “It’s been challenging but being on one leg for so long your balance gets a lot better so it gets easier and now it’s just a normal thing for me.”

His determination hasn’t gone unnoticed by teammates. Sophomore golfer Ryan Olson observed, “It’s very interesting at times when we go to these other meets, you know, a lot of kids are looking at him like, is he really gonna go out there and play? But then he goes out there and shoots the best on our team, so, you know, pretty amazing to see that.”

Beyond golf, Henning is also passionate about basketball and baseball. With baseball season approaching, he’s eager to return to the field.

“I love baseball, my coach, he’s awesome, helps me through everything,” Henning said. “He wanted me to be the starting shortstop and I’m hoping to get back to that and getting back in the lineup and everything.”
