Atlanta city officials say many older adults struggle to access essential services, so the city brought help directly to them…
In a welcoming setting in the atrium of Atlanta City Hall this week, service providers offered guidance on housing, healthcare benefits, employment, and more for the city’s seniors.
“We know it is hard out here for our seniors,” said City Councilman Jason Dozier.
Among those attending was Coretha Easterling, who shared her difficulties coping with rising costs.
“Some seniors don’t know [where to turn],” Easterling explained.
Councilman Dozier emphasized the importance of making information accessible: “A lot of our seniors have to rely on Social Security, and are navigating the high cost of living and energy costs, so we’re trying to bring the resources to them so they can weather this storm.”
Dozier partnered with Georgia nonprofit Stimulate America, whose founder, Tiffany Howard, noted that many seniors look for part-time or seasonal work to help cover expenses during inflation.
The event assisted with:
• Affordable housing programs
• Medicare, Social Security, and veterans’ benefits
• Part-time and seasonal employment opportunities
“It helps the seniors to know what they can get or information they need to know,” Easterling added.
This was the first of four planned events aimed at helping the senior community in Atlanta.
