Sia Liilii, powerhouse athlete and rising voice in sports advocacy, sat down with Doc & The Block for a conversation that packed a punch. With her signature mix of grit and grace, Liilii broke down how women’s sports transformed her life on and off the court.
Liilii is a senior volleyball captain at the University of Nevada, Reno.
“Being a D1 athlete taught me a lot about time management,” Liilii said. “You have to know how to work it — and I learned that through sports and college.”
“It’s not just the sport you learn — it’s life skills,” Liilii added.
Liilii is a vocal advocate for the preservation of women’s sports and has spoken out about the issues surrounding transgender athletes on women’s teams, and shared her own experience with Doc & The Block.
“We were preparing for a game against our in-state rival UNLV, and our school had put out a statement for us — without consulting us … and then after that, as a captain, I huddled our team together to address how we felt about our situation,” Liilii said. “And a lot of us addressed concerns about safety on the court and opportunities for women in D1 athletics.”
“We just knew it wasn’t right … in my heart, God told me this is what I was called to do, to advocate on this issue,” Liilii said.
